Chicago-Kent announces 2010-2011 HLERK scholarship recipient

Chicago-Kent College of Law announced Amanda Clark, a second-year law student, as the recipient of the Hodges, Loizzi, Eisenhammer, Rodick & Kohn Scholarship for the 2010-2011 school year.

Each year, beginning in 2007, a $5,000 scholarship is awarded on HLERK's behalf to a law student with ties to the representation of school districts and other units of local government. Additional factors taken into account include academic performance, background and financial need.

Clark graduated magna cum laude from North Park University with a double major in Politics and Government and Scandinavian Studies. She is a member of the Labor and Employment Law Society. Her great grandparents, grandparents and parents all were public school teachers.

The scholarship is awarded as part of the Chicago-Kent's Institute for Law and the Workplace Scholarship Program, which awards scholarships to law students enrolled in the College's Labor and Employment Law certificate program. This year, the College awarded $147,000 in scholarships to thirty students.

A major purpose of the scholarship is to provide much needed financial support to law students, said Martin Malin, law professor and director of Chicago-Kent's Institute for Law and the Workplace. This support is particularly important for students looking to work for public educational employers, since salaries usually are not as substantial as those paid in the private sector.

"The most significant impact is to minimize debt load, which maximizes options post-graduation," Malin said.

In addition to the scholarship program, HLERK is a regular sponsor in the Institute's labor and employment externship program. The program allows law students to receive academic credit for working in the labor and employment law area under the supervision of designated attorneys.
